Immich-Batterieberg, Riesling Ellergrub, 2024

Ellergrub sits right next door to Batterieberg but tells a completely different story, and that story is written in blue slate. This dizzyingly steep single cru is planted with very old ungrafted vines, and it's the site Gernot Kollmann reaches for when he wants delicacy and refinement rather than sheer power. Farmed organically and fermented dry with wild yeast, it's raised in old wood the same way the estate treats all its top crus. Where Batterieberg is muscular, Ellergrub is cool, mineral, and mysterious. Blue slate has never tasted so precise. [Pre-arrival: expected to arrive mid-July.]

Robert Parker

94 points

"From more than 80-year-old, ungrafted vines and aged in pièces until the bottling in August 2025, the 2024 Ellergrub Enkircher Riesling offers a deep, intense and initially earthy or dusty stone bouquet that needs a bit of time to develop in the glass. Later on, ripe and somewhat tropical fruit aromas intertwined with flinty and herbal notes are released and give a complex, rather coolish character that is a bit mysterious. Very refined and elegant on the palate, this is a dense, tight and finely tannic yet also still stringent wine that needs lots of time to come into balance. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in Hannover, November 2025." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Immich-Batterieberg

One of the Mosel's oldest wineries, founded by monastery in 911 and traced to documented viticulture back then. Gernot Kollmann bought in 2008 and immediately went full-dry: ambient yeasts, full fermentations, minimal sulfur, five steep vineyards with names like Batterieberg (created literally by explosives in the 1840s). Profoundly dry Riesling made by somebody who thinks.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
