Lots of tension here that will soften with age or pair nicely with richer foods — lobster, creamy cheeses, roast chicken. We love the mineral intensity, lushness on the palate, and elegant structure.

The fruit comes from both Paulo's vineyards on the southern side of the mountain in São Mateus and from old vines along the western coast in Crioção Velha. It is fermented and aged “sur lies” for about two years in small horizontal tanks.

Paulo Machado is a third-generation Azorean winemaker who reserved his own fruit for Insula Vinus starting in 2006. He co-founded Azores Wine Company but kept his personal project separate—a field blend of Arinto dos Açores and Verdelho plus other native grapes from volcanic Pico Island. These are island wines with island conviction: pure, mineral, alive.
