Mountain Nebbiolo from Alto Piemonte, back when this was the famous half of Piedmont. Ghemme sits in the Novara hills north of Barolo and Barbaresco, in country that was more prestigious than either of them in the 19th century before depressions, wars and emigration hollowed it out. The Ioppa family bought their estate here in the mid-1800s and simply kept going while neighbors folded, and in recent years Andrea Ioppa has worked alongside Alto Piemonte consultant Cristiano Garella to smooth the most rustic edges without sanding off the character. Santa Fé is a single hillside site in Romagnano Sesia, on clay-heavy soil rich in kaolin, which is where the wine's mineral streak comes from, and it is raised in large old oak botti in the traditional Ghemme manner. This is Nebbiolo grown in a colder, higher place than the Langhe — more aromatic and more savory, with acidity that keeps it on the table through a whole meal.

Tasting Profile

Maraschino cherry, dried rose, spiced orange peel and earthy minerals. Medium-bodied and translucent, with high acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins that stay dry and savory through the finish.
