Do you remember your first taste of a living, no-makeup Beaujolais? For a lot of us it was Foillard Cote du Py. Jean Foillard is one of Kermit Lynch's original "Gang of Four," the Morgon growers who showed the world that Gamay could be both serious and simple, all lush fruit and refreshing minerality. The Cote du Py is the heart of it: an old volcanic hill of decomposed blue schist, shot through with granite and manganese, that gives Morgon its depth and structure — where his Corcelette is floral and open early, this is the one built to age, from vines running as old as ninety years. Foillard farms organically, harvests healthy and ripe, and ferments semi-carbonically with native yeasts and almost nothing added. 2024 was a difficult vintage in Beaujolais, with spring frost sharply reducing the crop, but the fruit that came in was excellent and the wines are lighter and more energetic than the 2022s, closer in spirit to classic Beaujolais of the early 2010s. Drink it now with a slight chill, or cellar it — older bottles have a way of standing up to far more "serious" Burgundies opened alongside them.

"The 2024 Morgon Côte du Py has a little more bandwidth and complexity compared to the Corcelette, a mélange of red and black fruit, black tea leaves and crushed stone. The palate is fresh and lively on the entry, a Côte du Py with a skip in its step and an assiduous sprinkling of white pepper towards the harmonious finish. Excellent." —Neal Martin

More about Jean Foillard

Jean Foillard is a natural-wine icon and charter member of Beaujolais' legendary 'gang of four'—those who answered Jules Chauvet's call to refuse pesticides, chaptalisation, and filtration. For half a century, his 14 organically farmed hectares have produced Morgon from the famed Côte du Py, with its roches pourries (rotten rock) of decomposed granite and schist. His wines are serious, lush, and utterly unforgettable.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken, charcuterie, coq au vin, grilled sausages, mushroom dishes, or a classic burger. Lightly chilled, it loves a picnic.

Tasting Profile

Dark cherry and berry fruit with violets, earth and a mineral edge. Medium-bodied, fine tannins, bright acidity; 2024 is more lifted than dense, with a long stony finish.
