Grands Echezeaux is one of Burgundy's smallest grand crus — just 9.14 hectares of gently sloping Bajocian chalk in Flagey-Echezeaux, separated from Clos de Vougeot by little more than a wall — and it sits among the summits of Drouhin's range. It regularly outshows its far larger neighbour Echezeaux, which sprawls across 36 hectares of varied slopes and exposures; the Grands has the tighter, grander frame. This gets the house's fullest treatment, the same regime as its Musigny: 20 to 50% whole clusters, indigenous yeasts, a vertical press, then 16 to 20 months in French oak with 30% new barrels. 2017 brought normal volumes back to the Côte d'Or after several short crops, and Drouhin deliberately chased aromatic expression over power — melted tannins, moderate acidity, a Grand Cru built to show its perfume early. The house puts optimal drinking at 15 to 20 years with a 30-year ceiling, so at nine years this wants a long decant now or, better, another decade in the cellar.

"The 2017 Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru was picked on September 8 with 35% whole clusters. Deep garnet in color, it has a well-defined bouquet of brambly black fruit, briar, lightly crushed stone and a touch of iris petals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, the acidity well-judged and imparting a natural balance. This is quite a suave Grands Echézeaux, a little spicy toward the second half, with gentle but insistent grip. Very good potential but it needs five or six years in bottle." —Neal Martin

One of Burgundy's giants since 1880, Drouhin controls more Grand Cru vineyard than almost anyone else. The house began converting to organic in 1993, achieving biodynamic certification by 1996, and their recent releases hum with freshness that contradicts the family's massive scale. This is Burgundy at its most authoritative.
