Domaine Joseph Roty holds one of the largest concentrations of old vines in Burgundy, and this Gevrey-Chambertin comes from the Champs Chenys lieu-dit, a village-level plot sitting right beside the Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin on limestone-rich marl studded with pebbles. Roty's traditional approach leans on those venerable vines and a generous hand of smoky oak, producing Gevrey of real depth and character. The 2006 is now a fully mature Burgundy, nearly two decades on, so the primary fruit has given way to the savory, earthy complexity that makes aged red Burgundy so prized. Decant and drink now.

"Good medium red. Lovely class and lift to the pure aromas of black fruits and licorice. Sweet black fruit and cocoa powder flavors are given a penetrating quality by mint and strong licorice elements. Reticent and youthfully tight on the finish, but the tannins are suave and the kirsch and licorice flavors convey an impression of energy." —Stephen Tanzer

"Philippe Roty’s 2006 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs-Chenys Vieilles Vignes – from vines planted in 1904 at the edge of Charmes Chambertin – once again demonstrates those vines' outstanding potential, and in the process that of its vintage as well. Red currant and cherry are shadowed in the nose by their distilled counterparts, along with high-toned floral essences including a Chambertin-like hint of rose petal. "Well of course you've got Chambertin here," jokes the proprietor, "it's washed downhill over the years." This ravishing aromatic display is complimented by a polished, bright, buoyant palate whose underlying tannin is fine and practically hidden. This finishes with lift and refinement of a sort one associates with so many of the best 2006s, and while it should keep well for at least the better part of a decade, it would be a shame not to commence enjoying it immediately."

More about Joseph Roty

Joseph Roty's family has been making wine since 1710, and today his sons Philippe and Pierre-Jean steward one of Burgundy's most coveted collections of old vines. Late picking, zero destemming, low-temperature fermentation—every choice is about extracting maximum complexity from ancient fruit. These are profound, age-worthy reds.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Beef bourguignon, roast duck, squab, mushroom dishes, or soft washed-rind cheeses.

Tasting Profile

A mature red Burgundy. Pinot Noir's red fruit has evolved toward dried cherry, forest floor, mushroom and gentle spice from oak. Medium-bodied, silky and resolved, with soft tannins, fresh acidity and an earthy, lingering finish.
