Perched high in the Helderberg Mountains, Steepside is Keermont’s most dramatic vineyard site—planted to Syrah on decomposed granite and sandstone soils with relentless exposure to the Cape’s winds and sun. The 2017 vintage was near-perfect in Stellenbosch: dry, moderate, and long-ripening, allowing for full phenolic maturity with beautiful natural acidity.

This wine is full of personality: blackberry, blueberry, and dark plum layered with black pepper, lavender, smoked meat, and a hint of wild fynbos. The palate is firm and structured but finely balanced—ripe tannins, savory spice, and a cool, mineral finish that speaks to elevation and restraint.

Steepside is a Syrah for both Rhône lovers and bold red drinkers seeking something new—age-worthy, soulful, and a vivid expression of Stellenbosch’s potential for serious, site-driven wine.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 92
"The 2017 Syrah Single Vineyard Series Steepside is matured for 20 months in seasoned oak. There is a slight reduction on the nose with dark berry fruit and light violet scents. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, well balanced and definitely a more elegant and understated Syrah with long and tender finish. Lovely." -Neal Martin

Robert Parker

RP 93
"Deep and brooding with a mineral-driven nose, the 2017 Steepside Syrah offers black fruit aromas with herbs and spices that are delightfully reminiscent of Cornas. There are soft hints of meat and black pepper followed by notes of olive tapenade that float out of the glass with a fresh frame of dusty fruit. Full-bodied, the palate offers impeccable balance with succulent acidity and round yet firm tannins that drive through the lingering and spicy finish." -Anthony Mueller

Wine Spectator

WS 92
"Offers lush flavors of black cherry and boysenberry compote layered with fragrant espresso crema, ganache, violet and anise, while fresh acidity and a tang of iron provide balance. Expressive and medium- to full-bodied, with creamy tannins delivering good tension and definition through the lasting finish. Drink now through 2030."

Wine Enthusiast

WE 91
"This is a structured Syrah that displays aromas of salt, black fruit, herbs and peppercorn. Flavors of pomegranate, black cherry and hints of bay leaf result in a full-bodied red, with a chalky texture and lifting acidity."
