Mirabai is where Kelley Fox makes her whole argument about Pinot Noir — a grape she says is incapable of hiding behind its fruit — and it comes from some of the oldest, mostly own-rooted plantings in the Dundee Hills. Fox took dual master's degrees in biochemistry and biophysics before turning to wine, worked as assistant winemaker to David Lett at Eyrie and then a decade at Scott Paul, and has made her own wines since 2007; growers now hand her prize sites, including Weber, planted on its own roots in 1983, Durant from the 1970s and 80s, and the leased Stater block. The winemaking is deliberately unshowy: ambient yeasts only, a portion of whole clusters, gentle hand punchdowns rather than pumpovers, and élevage entirely in used 228-liter French barrels — she has bought no new oak since 2012. Oregon's 2024 is the vintage growers keep describing as ideal: an unhurried season with record heat early and late in September bracketing a cool stretch, then a dry, mild October that let fruit hang until it was genuinely ready. Expect the ethereal, red-fruited end of Dundee Hills Pinot rather than anything weighty, and give it a slight chill.

On the palate, it is soothingly round, with a subtle citrus inflection and crisp wild berry fruit, as a bump of juicy acidity maintains wonderful energy.
