What is this wine?
Knoll’s Traminer Smaragd 2023 is a richly aromatic white from the Wachau, Austria, produced by the legendary Knoll family in Unterloiben. Made from Traminer (a close relative of Gewürztraminer) grown on terraced vineyards of gneiss and loess, this Smaragd bottling—the Wachau’s highest quality tier—expresses both the opulence and mineral precision for which the estate is known. Fermented and aged in stainless steel and large neutral oak, it captures varietal perfume with exceptional balance.

Why get this wine?
Knoll’s Traminer Smaragd is one of Austria’s most distinctive aromatic whites—complex, spicy, and completely dry. The 2023 vintage offers the ideal combination of ripeness and tension, delivering exotic fruit and floral intensity anchored by the clarity of Wachau terroir. This is a connoisseur’s wine: expressive, rare, and beautifully crafted, perfect for those who appreciate the intersection of perfume and precision.

What does this wine taste like?
Highly aromatic, with notes of lychee, rose, orange blossom, and ginger balanced by a firm mineral core. The palate is textured yet dry, with fine acidity and a long, spicy, elegant finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Enjoy now for its vibrancy or cellar through 2035 for added depth. Ideal with aromatic dishes—Thai curries, roast duck, or soft cheeses. Serve cool, not cold.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 95
"The 2023 Gelber Traminer Loibner Smaragd comes from valley sites with smaller additions from both Kellerberg and Loibenberg. The color of the wine is surprisingly pale. The nose is a picture of a Damask rose, heady and bold, even with a headier bent of elderflower and a tone of mandarin ripeness. The palate is just as floral; its dryness presents some lemon freshness, but clarity and purity characterize this mild wine. It avoids any textural bitterness and presents a juicy, smooth flow and aromatic, floral length. It's quite a masterstroke for such an early-ripening, low-acid variety." -Anne Krebiehl MW
