Timorasso is the great comeback story of Piedmontese white wine: an indigenous grape of the Colli Tortonesi that had all but vanished by the 1980s and now has its own name on the label, Derthona, after the Roman name for Tortona. La Colombera is a five-generation Semino family estate in those hills east of Alessandria, and Elisa Semino, who wrote her enology thesis on the variety, is among the people most responsible for bringing it back. This bottling draws on several parcels planted between 1997 and 2000; the fruit gets a short three-hour maceration on skins, ferments with native yeasts, and then spends ten months on its lees, which is where the weight and texture come from. Farming is organic in practice if not on paper, with copper and sulfur only and the soil worked mechanically rather than sprayed. Drink it now for the citrus and stone fruit, or put it away — Timorasso is famous for developing smoky, waxy, mineral complexity with a few years in bottle, and this one is built for that.
