Zero dosage, all Pinot Noir, all from the mid-slope parcels of Écueil that give the cuvée its name — mi-pentes — and the ripeness to work with no sugar added at all. Écueil is a Premier Cru village on the western flank of the Petite Montagne de Reims, planted overwhelmingly to Pinot Noir on sand over deep chalk, which is why its reds-turned-white have a delicacy the Montagne's grander villages don't. Géraldine Lacourte and Richard Desvignes farm roughly eight hectares here to Demeter biodynamic certification, with sheep for weeding, trees planted among the vines, and a self-imposed cap of eight bunches per vine — half the legal maximum. Half of this blanc de noirs is fermented in barrels coopered from oak out of the Écueil forest itself, then it rests a minimum of 34 months on lees and four more after disgorgement, with the cork left in during élevage. Bone dry and built for the table rather than the toast; it will also take another five years in the cellar.

Robert Parker

"Disgorged in May 2024 without dosage, Lacourte-Godbillon’s latest NV Mi-Pentes Pinot Noir is based on the 2020 vintage, with 34% reserve wines from 2019. This cuvée—whose name translates to “mid-slope”—derives from south- and east-facing parcels planted on sandy soils. Vinified equally in barrels and stainless steel, it marks a significant qualitative leap from the NV Terroirs d'Écueil. Bursting with aromas of tangerine zest, yellow apple and pastry, it is medium- to full-bodied, elegant and harmonious, with ample chalky extract, racy acidity and a long, saline finish." —Kristaps Karklins

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
