Chiroubles is the highest of the ten Beaujolais crus, its vines climbing toward 600 meters on the most uniformly granitic soils in the region — altitude that keeps Gamay light on its feet. Frédéric Lafarge, of Volnay's Domaine Michel Lafarge, and his wife Chantal Vial bought vines here in 2014 after one too many hail- and frost-shortened crop on the Côte d'Or, and they farm this parcel — certified organic and Demeter biodynamic — with the same attention they give their Volnay. It is barely a third of a hectare, planted in 1969 and facing south to southeast; the fruit is picked by hand, fermented with 15–25% whole clusters on ambient yeast in concrete, then aged a year in used 228- and 350-liter barrels. The 2024 season was cool, wet and late, a long fight with mildew that cost real volume before a dry August rescued it, and the wines came in fresh and red-fruited rather than plush. Across the Lafarge-Vial range this is the bottle to open first: the most immediately charming of their crus, and lovely with a light chill.
