Mont Brouilly's blue diorite — the pierre bleue that gives this cru its reputation for savory, mineral Gamay — runs right through the granite under these vines. Lafarge-Vial's two-thirds of a hectare sits in the Brulhié lieu-dit on the southeast flank of the mountain, planted in 1968 on ground too steep for a tractor, so the plowing is done by horse (they borrow Olivier Merlin's). Frédéric Lafarge and Chantal Vial came down from Volnay in 2014 and brought their Côte d'Or habits with them: certified organic and biodynamic farming, hand harvesting, 15–25% whole clusters fermented on ambient yeast in concrete with gentle punch-downs and pump-overs, then a year in used 228- and 350-liter barrels. The cool, wet, late 2024 growing season took a bite out of the crop but left the surviving fruit taut and firmly built. This is the most structured wine in the range and the one with the longest runway — give it a decant now, or put a few bottles away.

At Fleurie, they farm biodynamically and make wine using traditional Burgundian methods. Their kids Maxime-Henri and Clothilde are taking over—ensuring the weird, beautiful vision continues.
