Clos Vernay is a single vineyard tucked into a sheltered valley in Fleurie, where the granite carries a heavy seam of quartz — and it makes the most delineated, precise wine Lafarge-Vial bottles. The 1.33-hectare site faces south to southeast and was planted in 1975 and 1980, making it the youngest-vined of their Fleurie parcels, which is part of why it comes across so airy and high-toned. Frédéric Lafarge of Volnay and Chantal Vial have farmed here since 2014, certified organic and Demeter biodynamic, and vinify as they do at home: about 15% whole clusters, ambient yeast fermentation in concrete, gentle extraction, then a year in used 228- and 350-liter barrels alongside 30-hectoliter foudres — the only cuvée in the range to see the larger wood. A cool, wet, late 2024 harvest, picked in the second week of September, gave a fresh and floral version rather than a rich one. Drink it over the next five or six years; a short decant opens it up beautifully.
