Lisini is old-school Montalcino to the core: organic farming, fermentation in concrete, aging in big old casks, and vineyards high in the sun-baked hills near Sant'Angelo in Colle. Poggio Severo is their answer to a warming climate, and it's brand new, with 2021 as the debut vintage. They climbed uphill to two plots at around 530 meters, bottling barely a couple thousand numbered bottles of pure high-altitude Sangiovese. The 2021 vintage was a frost-thinned, concentrated stunner, sitting between the power of 2016 and the grace of 2019. A first-release single-vineyard Brunello from one of the region's great traditionalists, and a Sangiovese to cellar.

"This new submission from Lisini, the 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Severo, shows a rich and velvety approach with dark fruit, blackberry and earthy notes layered with sweet tones from time spent in oak. The wine has a broad and generous profile thanks to well-draining sandstone soils, though the tannins show some firmness at this stage and will benefit from additional bottle age to soften and integrate. Sourced from the estate’s highest vineyards at 510 meters above sea level, this bottling captures a cooler, more structured side of the vintage. Only 3,000 bottles were produced.
