Before there was even a Maison Louis Jadot, there was this vineyard. The Jadot family bought Clos des Ursules in 1826, more than three decades before founding their famous house, and it has been theirs alone ever since—a walled monopole of barely three acres tucked inside the Vignes Franches premier cru at the southern edge of Beaune, on land the Ursuline nuns worked for roughly two centuries (convent founded 1626, plot sold to Jadot family in 1826). This is the wine the whole enterprise is named for, in a sense: the founding stone. The 1998 came from a firmer, more structured Beaune vintage, and after nearly three decades it has shed its early austerity and settled into that mellow, savory, fully mature register that only good old Burgundy reaches. Drink it now, without ceremony.

"Bright healthy red. Cherry and raspberry nose dulled by a note of old wood. Then round and sweet in the mouth, plump for the vintage but with solid supporting structure. I would have scored this higher were it not for the slightly advanced aromas and flavors." —Stephen Tanzer

More about Louis Jadot

Founded in 1859, Jadot is one of Burgundy's great estates and négociants, with 600 acres scattered across the region's best vineyards—Chablis to Moulin-à-Vent. They make hundreds of wines, but each bottle carries the iconic Bacchus emblem and the weight of nearly two centuries of accumulated wisdom. Burgundy without the pretension.

Medium-bodied and fully mature, with soft red fruit turned savory and earthy—mushroom, forest floor, a little dried cherry—and tannins long since smoothed out.
