The bottle that made Luciano Sandrone famous — under the original name, before the 2013 rechristening. Sandrone founded his Barolo estate in 1978 and began separately bottling his parcel on the Cannubi hill (specifically the Cannubi Boschis sub-zone) in 1985. The 1989 and 1990 vintages turned him into an international superstar; from the 2013 vintage forward, the same wine has been labeled 'Aleste' — a tribute to his grandchildren Alessia and Stefano. This 1998 is the wine in its classic Cannubi Boschis era. 1998 was a warm vintage in Piedmont, giving generous fruit and an approachable frame, and at 27 years on this is squarely in its mature window — resolved structure, expressive perfume, the famous Cannubi-hill silk on full display. Luciano passed in 2023; a chance to drink his calling card.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"Luciano Sandrone's 1998 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is another of the standouts in this tasting. Layers of perfumed dark fruit flow effortlessly from the glass with wonderful depth and purity. The wine offers a long, intensely harmonious personality and a refined, aristocratic finish. The 1998 is an excellent choice for readers who may also be cellaring bottles of the 1996 or the 1999, two wines that offer considerable upside potential." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

96 points

"The deep ruby/purple-colored 1998 Barolo Cannubi Boschis boasts a spectacular bouquet of mineral-infused black cherry liqueur, new saddle leather, and pain grille. This powerful, ripe 1998 offers full-bodied flavors, silky tannin, low acidity, gorgeous levels of glycerin, and a creamy mouthful of complex, layered, superbly pure Nebbiolo fruit." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Wine Spectator

95 points

"Dark ruby color, with dried porcini and plum and a hint of peach on the nose. Full-bodied, with superpolished tannins and raspberry, coffee bean and licorice character. It goes on and on. Still needs a few years of bottle age."

Wine Enthusiast

93 points

"Expensive, but worth every penny to experience such a big, lush, juicy mouthful of Barolo. Hints of dark-roasted coffee and wisps of maple syrup wrap around flavors of strawberries and tar, but this wine is all about the seduction of texture—velvety and supple, it leaves you wanting more and more."
