A twenty-seven-year-old Barolo from Cannubi, arguably the most famous single vineyard in Piedmont, in a vintage that Barolo lovers still speak about. Einaudi's parcel there runs to about 2.36 hectares at roughly 220 meters on a south-southeast slope of grey and white Sant'Agata marl, planted in stages from 1962 onward, and 1999 gave Piedmont a classically proportioned year: ripe but firmly structured, built for exactly this kind of distance. The estate was founded in Dogliani in 1897 by Luigi Einaudi, who went on to become President of the Italian Republic in 1948 and reportedly never missed a harvest. This bottle predates the estate's 2016 reset toward large casks and lighter-handed winemaking, so it comes from the richer, more oak-marked era, but nearly three decades have knitted all of that together. A back-vintage bottle from a private cellar: stand it upright a full day, decant gently off the sediment, and give it an hour or two.

Plums, black cherries, menthol and licorice all flesh out in the glass, but the oxidative overtones and hard tannins are impossible to miss. "I have had some doubts in the past about the very oaky version of Cannubi served up by the house, but could not be more pleased by 1999 Barolo Cannubi, where good sense seems to have dictated a more discrete use of the barrels. The spicy nose simply adds complexity to the very present floral and licorice aromas, and the sweet and round flavors are similarly varied, with chocolate and tar mingled with the mint, black cherry, and red currant notes.
