One of Hermitage's reference whites, made entirely from Marsanne vines that are now well over 60 years old. Chapoutier draws De l'Oree from the Les Murets lieu-dit, where ancient fluvioglacial alluvium and biodynamic farming yield tiny crops of intensely concentrated fruit. Roughly half the wine ferments and ages in large 600-liter wooden barrels with regular lees stirring, the rest in tank, building texture without overt oak. The result is famously rich and ageworthy, a white with the unctuous depth of a great white Burgundy yet unmistakably Rhone. At 2012, this is a mature bottle hitting its stride; decant and serve it with proper food rather than as an aperitif.

"Limpid gold. A bright, intensely perfumed bouquet displays fresh pit fruits, tangerine, pungent flowers and Thai basil, with a zesty mineral nuance building quickly. Rich yet energetic, showing excellent focus and depth to its juicy peach and orange flavors. Becomes spicier on the finish, which features chalky tannins and a touch of floral honey. Manages to be both rich and lithe, and has the capacity to reward extended cellaring."

"The 2012 Ermitage Cuvee de l'Oree is still firing on all cylinders, sporting heavenly notes of powdered rock, white flowers, honeyed orange blossom, white currants and a saltiness that keeps you coming back to the glass. Full-bodied, voluptuous and decadent, drink it anytime over the coming 2-3 decades." —Jeb Dunnuck

"Densely layered, with ginger gelée, creamed pineapple, heather honey and lemon shortbread notes, all offset by a racy salted butter spine. Bright honeysuckle and chamomile accents dapple the finish, which shows terrific length and definition. Drink now through 2022. 66 cases imported."

More about M. Chapoutier

Michel Chapoutier took over this 1879-founded Rhône legend in 1988 and immediately pushed toward quality. Now, all their vineyards are managed biodynamically, and they famously add Braille to every label since 1996. Known for their single-varietal approach and distinctive red and white Hermitages—wines that taste like the North Rhône distilled.
