Picked deliberately early — Vignaverde means "green vine" — to catch Grillo before the Sicilian sun takes the acidity out of it. Marco De Bartoli is the man who rescued Marsala's reputation from the cooking-wine aisle, and the estate his children Renato, Sebastiano and Giuseppina now run in Contrada Samperi makes dry whites that are every bit as compelling as the fortified wines it's famous for. This is 100% Grillo off 30-year-old estate vines, trained in single guyot, on sandy limestone-rich loam a few miles from the sea. Hand-harvested and gently pressed, the must settles for 48 hours, then ferments spontaneously with native yeasts in steel and rests six months on its lees before bottling unfiltered. One of those wines that tastes like a cool breeze off the Mediterranean.

More about Marco de Bartoli

Marco de Bartoli was once a professional race car driver before obsession with wine pulled him back to his family's Marsala farm in 1978. Now his three children work beside him, reviving native Sicilian grapes and restoring the good name of Marsala through fortified wines and dry whites. Vecchio Samperi is the wine that matters here—a career in a bottle.

Grilled sardines, pasta con le sarde, raw oysters and clams, caponata, arancini, or a lemony shrimp risotto.

Tasting Profile

Ripe lemon and orchard fruit over chalky minerality, with a savory almond note that's Grillo's signature. Medium-bodied, dry, bright acidity, long saline finish.

Rich and delicious

Beautiful rich texture with honeyed kumquot notes and a long minerally finish. Very satisfying.
