Gabriele Mastrojanni founded this estate in 1975 on steep slopes in Castelnuovo dell'Abate that others considered unsuitable for viticulture. The Illy coffee family acquired it in 2008, elevating resources while maintaining the non-interventionist approach established by oenologist Andrea Machetti. The estate's 18 hectares of Brunello vineyards range from 150 to 420 meters, including the historic Vigna Schiena d'Asino parcel. The 2012 vintage received Montalcino's top five-star rating despite—or because of—challenging conditions: a hot spring, rainless summer, and three days of intense Saharan sirocco winds produced the smallest crop in a decade but extraordinary concentration. Aged 36 months in Allier oak followed by bottle aging, this Brunello displays fresh cherry, black currant, and raspberry with velvety texture and soft tannins balanced by pronounced minerality. Still young—this wine will improve for another two decades.

"Luminous red. Highly complex nose offers aromas of red cherry, raspberry, flint and violet, plus a touch of beef bouillon; this is a candidate for the most complex nose of the vintage. Then textbook Sangiovese flavors of flinty red cherries, licorice and minerals. Long and clean on the perfumed, highly mineral finish." —Ian D'Agata

"Mastrojanni's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino marks a gorgeous effort that excels beautifully in terms of intensity, finesse and balance. The wine shows seamless integration of bright fruit tones that are characteristic of the vintage, with savory spice (it is aged in botte grande for three years), tight tannins and bright acidity. In other words, this is textbook 2010 Brunello in all its glory. That sense of harmony is impeccable. The best asset is what the future will bring. You can count on this Brunello to age 10 to 20 years. Mastrojanni has reached new heights with this stellar base Brunello and I can't wait to taste the vineyard-designate expressions when they are ready." —Monica Larner

"A fresh, compact style, with cherry, berry and almond fruit giving way to leather, tobacco and tar flavors. A little tough on the finish. Best from 2020 through 2028."

Kerin O'Keefe

"Ripe dark-skinned berry, baking spice and Mediterranean brush aromas waft out of the glass. The full-bodied if one-dimensional palate delivers succulent wild cherry, black raspberry, star anise and a hint of salty mineral alongside the warmth of evident alcohol. Big, velvety tannins provide the framework." —Kerin O'Keefe
