Kabinett from Piesporter Goldtröpfchen — one of the Mosel's most storied vineyards — made by a young grower whose wines have become some of the most chased in the region. Max Kilburg is a 20th-generation winemaker whose family has been growing wine here for more than 750 years; he runs the family's Geierslay estate and, alongside it, a micro-project of barely 1.2 hectares of old-vine Grand Cru parcels split between Ohligsberg and Goldtröpfchen. He worked with Julian Haart before taking over at home, and the two now live minutes apart in neighbouring villages, between them holding some of the most consequential parcels in Piesport and Wintrich. Goldtröpfchen is the warmer of Kilburg's two Grand Cru sites, an amphitheater of Devon slate veined with quartz curling around the village on a long outer bend of the river — but in Kabinett form it's the linear one, spiced and lithe rather than broad. Featherweight alcohol, a whisper of sweetness, and enough acid to keep it aloft for years.

More about Max Kilburg

Max Kilburg, a 20th-generation winemaker on the Mosel, is one of the brightest young stars of German Riesling. He farms his family's Geierslay estate and his own micro-project—just 1.2 hectares of old-vine Grand Cru parcels. His Rieslings taste like pure slate and mineral electricity. Authentic, unshowy, unforgettable.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Thai green curry, Sichuan dan dan noodles, pork schnitzel with lemon, smoked trout with horseradish cream, or a slab of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Light-bodied and low in alcohol, with aromas of peach, lime and wet stone plus a spicy, herbal edge. Gently sweet on entry but the sweetness is quickly cut by racing Mosel acidity, so it finishes more taut than sugary. Long, clean, slate-driven finish.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
