Mosel Pinot Noir is one of the most improbable pleasures in German wine right now, and Max Kilburg is among the very few doing it at a serious level. He's a 20th-generation Mosel winemaker, farming the family's Geierslay estate in Wintrich plus his own micro-project of old-vine Grand Cru parcels totaling about 1.2 hectares, and he trained with Julian Haart — the rigor shows. The Pinot comes from Ohligsberg, the steep, south-facing blue- and gray-slate Grand Cru that sits directly behind the winery, off vines his father planted in the mid-1980s; the slate holds heat and drains hard, which is exactly what red grapes need this far north. This is very early work — 2022 was only his second vintage of Pinot from the site —, and Max is open about still chasing his style, with an eye on Fourrier. 2022 has been quietly overlooked across his range, which is precisely why it's worth grabbing: a rare, lithe, slate-driven Pinot from a grower whose Rieslings are the reason most people know the name.

More about Max Kilburg

Max Kilburg, a 20th-generation winemaker on the Mosel, is one of the brightest young stars of German Riesling. He farms his family's Geierslay estate and his own micro-project—just 1.2 hectares of old-vine Grand Cru parcels. His Rieslings taste like pure slate and mineral electricity. Authentic, unshowy, unforgettable.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with cherries, mushroom and barley risotto, pork schnitzel, smoked trout salad, roast chicken with thyme, or a plate of Alpine cheeses like Comté and young Gruyère. Serve with a slight chill.

Tasting Profile

Light- to medium-bodied and transparent, with bright red cherry and cranberry fruit, a savory herbal edge, and a distinct stony, slate-like undertone. Acidity is lively and the tannins are very fine — more silk than grip. Finishes clean and mineral rather than rich, with real length.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
