Max Kilburg — who emerged almost out of nowhere in 2019 and rocketed into the region's top tier — farms old vines on its steep blue slate. Kilburg is a 20th-generation Wintrich grower who took over the family's historic Weingut Geierslay, trained at Geisenheim, and did time with Julian Haart, perhaps the most coveted name on the river; his own micro-project runs to barely 1.2 hectares of old-vine Grand Cru parcels. Spätlese here means the classical Mosel bargain: a touch of sweetness, modest alcohol, and acidity that keeps the whole thing weightless. Of his two Grand Crus, Goldtröpfchen is the warmer site but the brighter, more linear wine — stone fruit and spice rather than Ohligsberg's darker power. This is a genuinely exciting entry point into one of Germany's great sites.

More about Max Kilburg

Max Kilburg, the 20th generation of a Mosel winemaking family, is one of the brightest young stars of German Riesling. Alongside the family's Geierslay estate, he farms barely two hectares of his own, including old-vine parcels in the grand cru sites Ohligsberg and Goldtröpfchen. His Rieslings, dry and sweet, taste like pure slate and mineral electricity. Authentic, unshowy, unforgettable.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Thai green curry, Sichuan mapo tofu, pork schnitzel with lemon, smoked trout with horseradish cream, or a ripe washed-rind cheese like Époisses.

Tasting Profile

Peach, apricot and lime with a smoky wet-stone note and a touch of spice and herb. Light-bodied and modest in alcohol, with gentle sweetness cut by bright, piercing acidity, so it tastes more refreshing than sweet. Long, clean, mineral finish.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
