Wintricher Ohligsberg is the site nearly every Mosel winemaker names among the very top of the region, and Max Kilburg farms an older-vine parcel of it — a south-facing amphitheatre of blue slate that leans darker and more powerful than the brighter Goldtröpfchen, with cool breezes sliding down a side valley to keep the fruit tense. Kilburg is a 20th-generation grower who runs the family's historic Weingut Geierslay in Wintrich and trained with Julian Haart, who lives minutes away; his own line comes from less than two hectares of old-vine Grand Cru parcels in Ohligsberg and Goldtröpfchen, which is to say there is very little of it. The Ohligsberg Spätlese is the powerful, deep one in his range — more than one taster has put it next to Willi Schaefer's Domprobst for firmness and structure. One caveat worth knowing about the year: 2023's generous water made fermentations run easy and strong across the Mosel, so most wines finished drier than usual, Spätlesen included. If you like your Prädikat Riesling on the leaner, more sharply drawn side of off-dry, that's a feature, not a bug.

More about Max Kilburg

Max Kilburg, a 20th-generation winemaker on the Mosel, is one of the brightest young stars of German Riesling. He farms his family's Geierslay estate and his own micro-project—just 1.2 hectares of old-vine Grand Cru parcels. His Rieslings taste like pure slate and mineral electricity. Authentic, unshowy, unforgettable.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast pork loin with apples, smoked trout, Thai green curry, Vietnamese bún chả, crab cakes with remoulade, or a slab of Roquefort. The acid handles chili heat and salt as easily as it handles richness.

Tasting Profile

Riesling in the Spätlese style, so expect ripe stone fruit and citrus over a smoky blue-slate core, with a darker, deeper fruit tone than most Mosel Riesling. With firm, driving acidity and only a light touch of sweetness — 2023's easy fermentations left residual sugars low. The finish is long, stony and firm.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
