Ribolla Gialla is Friuli's proudest native white grape, and this is Miani's only bottling of it, from the Pettarin vineyard in Rosazzo, long considered a grand cru site for the variety. The vines are extraordinary, between 80 and 100 years old, rooted in classic ponca marl, and because Ribolla is naturally vigorous, Enzo Pontoni slashes yields hard to concentrate the fruit. It ferments on its lees for about a year with no stirring, building texture the slow way. This is allocation-only wine from an estate that makes fewer than 700 cases of everything combined, so a single-vineyard Ribolla from century-old vines is about as rare as Friuli gets.

"The 2022 Ribolla Gialla Pettarin is wildly fresh and lifted, with a cascade of dusty florals and sweet spice as nuances of lemon sorbet and mint emerge over time. It sweeps across the palate with soothingly round textures, while ripe apricot and salty mineral tones create a display of contrasts. It cleans up remarkably well, finishing long and spicy with a subtle hint of raw almond that adds a bitter tinge. The 2022 enjoys an exotic lift from a small % of botrytis berries." —Eric Guido

Enzo Pontoni founded Miani in 1985 and capped production at fewer than 700 cases per year. His Sauvignon Blancs command a cult following—rare, expensive, impossible to find. The soil is ponca: layers of calcareous clay and sandstone. The approach is obsessive. This is what happens when a grower refuses to compromise or scale up.
