A traditional, old-vine Châteauneuf-du-Pape now drinking in its mature sweet spot. The Jeune family has farmed in Châteauneuf since the 18th century, and Paul Jeune established Domaine Monpertuis under his own name in 1970, working vines scattered across many small parcels of the appellation. The classic Châteauneuf is a Grenache-led blend raised the old-fashioned way in foudres and concrete, built for the long haul. At fifteen-plus years of age, the 2010, a celebrated vintage in the southern Rhône for its balance and structure, has shed its baby fat and turned savory and complex. This is what patience buys you: a mature Châteauneuf with secondary character, ready to pour tonight.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"Bright ruby-red. Complex, floral-accented scents of raspberry, sassafras and blood orange, with a subtle touch of white pepper. Tangy and youthfully taut, then turns fleshier and spicier with air, offering sweet red fruit preserve flavors and notes of black tea and licorice. Finishes with notes of star anise and allspice. Nicely precise and balanced to age." —Josh Raynolds

Robert Parker

86 points

"Proprietor Paul Jeune has turned out a 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape that is quite traditional, oozing the hallmark characteristics of a Provencal wine – garrigue, ground pepper, spice box, licorice, fruit cake and loamy soil notes. This 2010 is medium-bodied and elegant, but narrows out in the finish and seems very pleasant and tasty, but not all that complex or substantial." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Wine Enthusiast

93 points

"Prototypical Châteauneuf-du-Pape, from its textbook aromas of leather, spice and black cherries to its ample body and supple tannins. It's creamy in texture but doesn't show any excess weight, just a lovely expression of cherries, suede, chocolate and a subtle touch of dried spices on the long finish." —Joe Czerwinski
