Monteraponi's top cru, from the estate's highest and stoniest ground. The Baron'Ugo vineyard sits at 560 meters on pure alberese limestone, with vines around forty years old, and the wine is bottled as a humble Toscana Rosso rather than Chianti Classico. Same traditional recipe as the rest of the cellar, 90% Sangiovese with 7% Canaiolo and 3% Colorino, fermented in concrete with ambient yeasts, but here the wine spends a full 36 months in 3,000-liter casks before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Michele Braganti farms organically with biodynamic practices, and the altitude shows up as tension and aromatic lift rather than power for its own sake. The 2019 was an excellent, classically proportioned Tuscan vintage; give this bottle time or a long decant.

"The 2019 Baron'Ugo is sourced from a vineyard established in 1974, among the first vines planted by Antonio Braganti when he purchased the property. It sits at 560 meters in elevation, which is a positive now but could not have been at the time. Baron'Ugo is distinguished by its red-toned fruit, along with hints of iron, leather, white pepper, mint and blood orange that gradually open in the glass, adding considerable nuance throughout. From single most exciting young estate to one of Chianti Classico's standout names. Monteraponi, a medieval village just outside Radda, is home to Michele Braganti's 12 hectares of vineyard on the southern slopes of the commune. He uses concrete for fermentation, big oak for aging, and biodynamic farming to pull bright red fruit and floral aromatics from sandy-calcareous soils. Proof that the Classico zone still has surprises.
