What is this wine?
Montevertine’s Le Pergole Torte 1998 (Magnum) is a pure Sangiovese from Radda in Chianti, one of Tuscany’s most revered estates. Founded by Sergio Manetti, Montevertine left the Chianti Classico DOCG in the 1980s to focus solely on uncompromising, traditional Sangiovese. Crafted by the legendary winemaker Giulio Gambelli, the 1998 vintage was fermented in concrete tanks and aged in large Slavonian oak casks and French barriques. The result is a wine of remarkable elegance, purity, and longevity, expressing the limestone and galestro soils of Radda with unmatched finesse.

Why get this wine?
Le Pergole Torte is Italy’s most iconic 100% Sangiovese—often described as the soul of Tuscany in a bottle. The 1998 vintage, now at full maturity, displays all the grace and aromatic complexity that have made Montevertine’s wines legendary. In magnum, it has evolved beautifully: supple yet vibrant, offering tertiary depth while retaining freshness. A rare collector’s gem and a testament to traditional Tuscan craftsmanship.

What does this wine taste like?
Aromas of dried cherry, rose petal, tobacco, and cedar lead to a silky palate of red fruit, herbs, and earth. The tannins are fine and resolved, with lingering minerality and a long, savory finish.

When should you drink this wine?
At peak maturity now through 2035. Decant gently for 30–60 minutes before serving. Pairs beautifully with aged Pecorino, roast game, or truffle dishes.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

"The 1998 Le Pergole Torte offers strong floral notes and evident notes of oxidation. This vintage is not as full or generous as the 1997 expression. But it does show a graceful and silky disposition with rose hip and dried violets. This was a cool growing season that produced a compact and thinly textured mouthfeel as a result. If you have a bottle, I would not suggest waiting much longer. The 1998 vintage is nearing the end of its drinking window." -Monica Larner
