Montevertine is the estate that famously walked away from the Chianti Classico appellation in 1981, and this Rosso (the Montevertine bottling) remains a benchmark of Radda terroir. A Sangiovese-based blend with a little Canaiolo and Colorino, grown high in the hills of Radda in Chianti, it carries only an IGT label despite being one of Tuscany's most respected wines. The warmer, riper 2015 vintage gives this bottling a touch more flesh and generosity than cooler years, while keeping Radda's hallmark aromatic lift. At a decade old it's drinking beautifully now, with room to evolve further.

"The 2015 Montevertine has closed down massively since it was bottled in February 2018. Beams of tannin dominate over the radiant fruit that was much more expressive when the wine was in barrel. Readers will have to be patient with the 2015, as it needs at least a few years in bottle to show the natural richness of the vintage that was so evident when the wine was in barrel. This should be an especially cellar worthy 2015." —Antonio Galloni

"This beautiful wine grabs your attention from the start. Tasted as a barrel sample, the 2015 Montevertine opens to a rich and beautifully saturated color. The wine's density is more extracted and dense, and the aromas are abundantly generous and opulent as a result. Yet, all that excess is carefully contained within the elegant and nuanced approach so perfectly expressed by this historic estate. Blue flower definition with violets and lavender segue to dark fruit, spice and white pepper. The blend is 90% Sangiovese with smaller parts Canaiolo and Colorino. The wine is fermented in cement and then ages in oak for two years. Montevertine sees fruit sourced from the same vineyard that makes Pian del Ciampolo, but fruit here represents a first selection." —Monica Larner

More about Montevertine

Pure expression of Radda terroir through an act of principle. When Sergio Manetti refused to add Trebbiano to his Sangiovese blend, Montevertine had to leave the Chianti Classico consortium. But he also liberated himself from rules—and proved that one grape, farmed with passion, could represent a place more honestly than compromise wines. The result: a three-decade cult following and some of Tuscany's most elegant Sangiovese.

Tasting Profile

Sangiovese from Radda's high hills, in a slightly riper register. Ripe red cherry and plum fruit with floral and herbal aromatics, edged with leather and earth. Medium to full-bodied, fine-grained tannins, lively acidity, long finish.
