Montevertine is a legendary estate in the Chianti Classico zone that famously left the DOCG to bottle its wines under the Toscana IGT designation—refusing to blend in international grapes and choosing instead to focus solely on native varieties, especially Sangiovese. The Montevertine Rosso sits just below Le Pergole Torte in the lineup, but is no less serious—especially with a decade of bottle age.

The 2013 vintage was one of balance and classicism in Tuscany, yielding a wine that is now fully harmonized: cherry, dried rose, orange peel, tobacco, and Tuscan herbs, with a palate that is both silken and structured. The acidity remains vibrant, the tannins resolved, and the finish long and mineral.

Aged in large Slavonian oak and bottled without flashy intervention, Montevertine Rosso 2013 is old-school in the best way—built for the table, whispering of place, and offering immense depth with food or on its own.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"The 2013 Montevertine is a firm, classically built wine that is likely to require quite a few years to unwind. Bright acidity and beams of tannin provide the structural backbone. Still very primary and unevolved, the 2013 has closed down considerably since I tasted it from cask last year. The searing, mid-weight style will appeal most to readers who enjoy classically austere wines, but bottles opened before the age of ten are likely to not be particularly enjoyable. This is a wine for the long haul." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

95 points

"Adopting a soft and intricate approach, the 2013 Montevertine is like an Impressionist's painting executed with pastel colors and bright patches of luminosity. The wine is subtle and undertone, yet the power of the narrative is not lost. It speaks of the purity of Sangiovese with impeccable aromas of wild cherry and white cherry that are followed by pressed rose and dried violets. The mouthfeel is silky and polished. The slightly cooler vintage, the long growing season and slow ripening have all contributed to create this truly authentic taste of Sangiovese." —Monica Larner

More about Montevertine

Pure expression of Radda terroir through an act of principle. When Sergio Manetti refused to add Trebbiano to his Sangiovese blend, Montevertine had to leave the Chianti Classico consortium. But he also liberated himself from rules—and proved that one grape, farmed with passion, could represent a place more honestly than compromise wines. The result: a three-decade cult following and some of Tuscany's most elegant Sangiovese.

Tasting Profile

Rich and complex with dark cherry, plum, and mineral undertones. Full body with structured tannins and balanced acidity. Finish is long with persistent dark fruit.

You probably already know about Montevertine. It has been one Tuscany's brightest stars for decades, on the forefront of every movement that has made the region what it is today. They stepped out of the consorzio because of their belief in Sangiovese, helping to create the Super-Tuscan movement. They have always sought to express their distinct Radda terroir, laying the foundation for today's growing interest in Chianti's varied crus (and especially in Radda!).
