Alsace's Andre Ostertag makes Pinot Noir in Chile, and the result tastes nothing like what you expect from the country. Montsecano was founded in 2005 by Ostertag and the Chilean photojournalist Julio Donoso on a small hillside property at Lo Ovalle in the Casablanca Valley, where granitic soils and cool coastal air do the work that oak usually gets asked to do. The four-hectare estate is certified biodynamic and plowed by horse, and the wines are fermented in stainless steel and in concrete eggs housed in a subterranean cellar built for the purpose, with no oak aging at all. What comes out is light-footed and energetic, with a saline cool-climate edge. Serve it cool, around cellar temperature.
