Winemaker Seth Morgen Long has built a cult following for his micro-lot Chardonnays, each rooted in site and shaped by patient élevage. The 2021 Late Release from the Eola-Amity Hills is a blend of top vineyard sources, held longer in barrel and bottle to bring out added nuance, texture, and structure.

The wine opens with layers of lemon curd, white peach, and crushed stone, supported by subtle lees richness and gentle oak framing. The extra aging brings composure and length—there’s tension and energy, but also polish and quiet depth. Fermented with native yeasts and aged in mostly neutral French oak, it’s a Chardonnay that feels both volcanic and vinous: taut and mineral on the surface, with complexity unfolding beneath.

Drink now or hold for 5–7 years. Pair with roast chicken, Dungeness crab, or aged cheeses. Morgen Long’s 2021 Late Release is a standout in the new wave of Oregon Chardonnay—precise, expressive, and unmistakably crafted with time in mind.

More about Morgen Long

Seth Morgen Long is the first (and only) Oregon winemaker completely devoted to Willamette Valley Chardonnay. After 15 years in restaurants and a stint at Domaine de Montille in Burgundy, he started in 2014 buying small lots from old-school farmers. His focus on balance, acidity, and fruit development is monastic. The wine shows it.

The lots were not racked off solids, vineyard-specific pied de cuve kicked off ambient yeast fermentations in warming steel tanks. Each lot was then transferred with full solids to a mix of new, second fill and third fill Damy puncheons.AGINGAged for one year in oak, 50% new and 50% second fill Damy puncheons, and an additional 126 months in stainless steel on the lees and racked into steel tank for 6 more months before bottling.
