Pelissero's flagship cru is one of the rare Barbaresco vineyards that straddles all three of the appellation's core villages at once. Cascina Vanotu sits where Treiso, Barbaresco and Neive meet, its parcels falling into the Marcarini, Tre Stelle and Basarin crus, facing due south at 300 to 350 meters on soil particularly rich in limestone - which the family credits for the softness and perfume that mark the wine. Luigi Pelissero replanted the highest section in 1964, and Vanotu has been the family's calling card since Giorgio Pelissero began bottling it at the end of the 1980s. The winemaking is deliberately modern for Barbaresco: temperature-controlled fermentation, then 20 to 22 months in French barriques, mostly new, which in youth gives a plush, dark, spice-framed Nebbiolo. 2000 was a warm, generous Langhe vintage, and at twenty-six years the oak has folded in and the fruit has gone dried and savory. From a private cellar - decant it and drink it now.
