Philip Lardot, Pinot Noir "Eule", 2024

Six hundred bottles of Mosel Pinot Noir at 11.5% alcohol — this is the featherweight, slate-grown red that Germany's most famous Riesling valley has quietly gotten very good at. "Eule" comes from west-facing grey slate in the Briedeler Herzchen, aged 18 months in barrique and bottled unfiltered as Landwein der Mosel, which tells you Philip Lardot cares more about what's in the glass than about qualifying for a category. He and Rosalie Curtin farm five hectares scattered across 26 tiny parcels between Pünderich, Briedel, Zell, St. Aldegund and Briedern — a third of it old, sometimes pre-war ungrafted Riesling vines on single posts, on steep dry-walled terraces, many of them historic sites being abandoned because they cannot keep pace with viticultural industrialization. Everything is done by hand, with no herbicides or fertilizers and as little intervention as possible. 2024 was one of their best vintages, and this is a wine built for patience: the single-vineyard bottlings here reward more time in bottle than the rest of the range. If you've been curious what Pinot Noir tastes like when it's grown on slate instead of limestone, start here.

More about Philip Lardot

Philip Lardot was born in Finland, grew up in Amsterdam, moved to Copenhagen to work for a natural wine importer, then went to Burgundy for a harvest before landing in Clemens Busch's vineyard in Moselle. He never left. With wife Rosalie Curtin, he farms five hectares on Moselle's steep slopes as a natural wine producer. The project is small, serious, and built on a path that wandered across Europe before finding its true home in German terroir.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with cherries, mushroom and barley risotto, smoked trout, choucroute garnie, or a plate of charcuterie and cornichons. Serve with a slight chill.

Tasting Profile

Fresh-picked blackberry and cherry over cinnamon, cherry bark, Darjeeling tea and a touch of saffron. Light-bodied and low in alcohol, with bright acidity and fine, fine-grained tannin rather than weight. Savory, slatey finish. Young and tightly wound now — it will open with time.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
