Benchmark Saint-Joseph from one of the Northern Rhône's most beloved family domaines, in its lightest and most perfumed guise. Pierre and Jean Gonon farm steep, granite slopes in Mauves, the historic heart of the appellation directly across from the Hermitage hill, with which they share the same granitic bedrock. They farm organically (no chemicals since 2004; later certified), harvest by hand, and ferment whole-ish clusters with native yeasts in the traditional way, producing Syrah of remarkable purity and finesse rather than brute power. A wet, cool July and August in 2014 plus heavy pressure from the drosophila fruit fly meant ruthless sorting, but a fine September saved the vintage and the wines came out lower in alcohol, fresh and strikingly aromatic. At twelve years the 2014 is wide open — floral, peppery and light on its feet, with no tannin left to wait out. From a private cellar; a Gonon to drink this year, and one that takes a slight chill happily.
