Pierre-Jean Villa is one of the Northern Rhone's most compelling modern producers, farming organically and making precise, terroir-driven wines since 2009. 'Preface' is his entry-level Saint-Joseph, and the red is pure Syrah from the appellation's granite slopes, the classic introduction to Northern Rhone Syrah. Expect dark fruit, black pepper, violets and a savory, peppery backbone with fresh acidity and approachable tannins. It's a genuine, well-priced taste of serious Syrah that drinks beautifully young.
