Dr. Bodenstein replanted this abandoned vineyard at the top of the Achleiten in 1997 with 110 different biotypes of Grüner Veltliner on four different rootstocks. His fear was that heavy replanting of just a few clones across Austria was leading to a rapid loss of the grape's once vast biodiversity.

Most Grüner Veltliner is planted at low elevation, in fertile soils, at low density to produce easy-drinking, if somewhat innocuous, high-volume juice. Here we have the opposite. Besides the inherent complexity of 110 different biotypes, the vines are planted at high density, in meager-soiled, terraced vineyards with often less than half the normal yields—and even then they struggle to ripen, pushing harvest well into autumn.

This has become one of Austria's most sought-after wines for its intense structure, deep concentration, and filigreed aromatics, all with a leaner, more acid-driven profile. It's drinking beautifully now but will go the distance in your cellar should you choose to hold onto it.
