A quarter-century on, this is mountain Merlot in full maturity: all Merlot, grown at 2,100 feet on the crest of the Mayacamas, above the fog line where the nights turn genuinely cold. Pride Mountain's ranch straddles the Napa-Sonoma county line, and this vintage drew 55% of its fruit from the Napa side and 45% from Sonoma; the wine was fermented in stainless steel, raised in French oak, and bottled in the spring of 2003. Pride has always treated Merlot as a serious grape rather than a soft one, and the altitude does the rest, giving small berries, thick skins and real structure. 2001 was a ripe, firmly structured North Coast vintage that produced wines with the stuffing to go this distance, and the fruit here has turned toward dried cherry, tobacco and forest floor while the tannins have fully resolved. Stand the bottle upright for a day, decant gently off any sediment, and drink it the evening you open it.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"Good dark red. Smoky aromas of black raspberry, coffee and nutty oak. Lush, fat and sweet, with layered flavors of black raspberry and sweet oak. Quintessential Pride merlot, with strong fruit complemented but not overwhelmed by 100% new oak." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

90 points

"The 2001 Merlot (a blend of Napa and Sonoma fruit) possesses a healthy dark ruby/purple color, a supple texture and lots of vibrant wild berry fruit intermixed with hints of cocoa, mocha and white chocolate. This fleshy, succulent, sexy, fully mature Merlot is capable of lasting another decade." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Wine Spectator

93 points

"Beautifully crafted, exquisitely balanced and rich in currant, exotic spice and ripe blackberry fruit. Turns spicy and exhibits pretty mocha-scented oak, with a long, broad, rich aftertaste."

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast leg of lamb, braised short ribs, duck confit with lentils, mushroom risotto, or aged hard cheese. Keep the seasoning gentle; a mature wine does not want to be shouted at.

Tasting Profile

Fully mature and medium- to full-bodied. Dried cherry and plum have moved toward tobacco, cedar, leather and forest floor, with a little cocoa. Tannins are resolved, acidity gentle, and the finish is long and secondary.
