Produttori del Barbaresco is the benchmark for traditionally made, terroir-driven Barbaresco, and Montefico is one of its most distinctive crus. Known for its steep, south-facing slopes and compact limestone-clay soils, Montefico produces some of the most structured and long-lived wines in the Produttori lineup. The 2019 vintage, a near-perfect growing season, brings both power and finesse, making for a Barbaresco that balances intensity with elegance.

Bright red cherry, wild strawberry, and blood orange lead the aromatics, layered with dried rose petals, anise, and a deep, iron-tinged minerality. The tannins are firm yet finely woven, giving the wine a chiseled, precise structure that promises decades of evolution. Compared to Rabajà’s broader richness or Ovello’s softer profile, Montefico is the most linear and mineral-driven of the crus, with a tension and freshness that make it a true collector’s wine.

Best enjoyed with patience, this 2019 Montefico will reward cellaring for 15–25 years. Decant if drinking young to soften its structure, and pair it with classic Piemontese dishes like tajarin with truffle, braised meats, or aged cheeses. A profound expression of Barbaresco at its most age-worthy.

The Produttori is Barbaresco’s benchmark producer. A huge share of the village’s best farmers, representing virtually all of its best terroirs, bring their fruit to the co-op. It is hard to be admitted to the co-op. There is a waiting list; only a few make it. Once you are in, the rules are strict. You don’t get to hold back any wine for your own labels. This isn’t a region where growers ship off their second best to the co-op and put their pride and joy in their own luxury bottles. You have to meet strict quality controls, of course. The Produttori is only devoted to quality-minded farmers with incredible terroir giving their all. The winemaking is likewise next level. Aldo Vacca, the co-op’s general manager, is one of the wine world’s greatest artists. If you ever have the opportunity to meet and taste with him, take it; he is also one of the wine world’s great communicators.
