R. H. Coutier, Champagne Tradition Brut Grand Cru, NV (Base 2021)

Real grower Champagne from Ambonnay, the grand cru village where the Coutier family has farmed since 1619. Antoine Coutier, the fifth generation, keeps production small and works his nine hectares sustainably, bottling only the best fruit himself. This Tradition Brut leads with Ambonnay's prized Pinot Noir rounded out with Chardonnay, a style his grandfather pioneered by being the first in Ambonnay to plant Chardonnay, back in 1948, capturing the richness and depth of the village's chalky soils. Built on the 2021 base, it's classic, balanced, and a genuine value in grand cru bubbles. Pop it for any occasion that deserves the real thing.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"The NV Brut Tradition Grand Cru is stellar. Kirsch, dried flowers, spice, dried pear and mint all show a slightly burnished quality that makes me think it is best suited to near term drinking. I don't imagine ageability will be a problem, however, as most bottles will likely be long gone before that is an issue. The richness and breadth of Ambonnay Pinot are very much in evidence. There are no hard edges to this vinous, heady Champagne from Coutier. This release is 60% 2015 and 40% reserve wines. Dosage is 6 grams per liter." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

91 points

"Disgorged in October 2020 with six grams per liter dosage, the latest rendition of Coutier's NV Brut Grand Cru Tradition is based on the 2013 vintage, complemented by fully 40% reserve wines. Exhibiting notions of waxy orchard fruit, honeycomb, mint, tangerine oil and fresh pastry, it's medium to full-bodied, bright and pillowy, with tangy acids and a fleshy core of fruit. Full of flavor and character, this is a fine effort." —William Kelley

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
