A mature California Cabernet grown on decomposed granite high in the Sierra Foothills, at an alcohol level most of the state abandoned decades ago. Renaissance farms a 1,300-acre property above Oregon House in Yuba County, its vines terraced around a granite dome between roughly 1,700 and 2,300 feet, where freezing nights and blazing afternoons stretch the growing season out. The estate is the reason North Yuba became an AVA in the mid-1980s, and under Gideon Beinstock, winemaker here from 1993 into the mid-2000s and also the founder of Clos Saron, the reds were dry-farmed and organically grown, fermented with native yeasts, raised in used barrels and bottled without fining or filtration. Reserve is the Cabernet-based top tier, and Renaissance was famous for holding its best reds in barrel and bottle for years rather than pushing them out young, so the wine arrives already unwound rather than needing another decade. Stand the bottle upright for a day or two before opening, decant gently off the sediment, and plan to finish it that evening.

More about Renaissance

South Africa's wine industry exploded in the 1990s when apartheid ended and the world suddenly opened up. Renaissance represents that awakening—producers who had access to new techniques, new markets, new possibilities. A movement toward serious quality and international varieties happened quickly, with flying winemakers and a reimagined competitive landscape forcing everyone to get better. It's the story of a country finding its voice in wine.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Rare roast beef or a standing rib roast, braised short ribs, or a mushroom and thyme tart. Aged hard cheeses like Comte or a dry jack also work well with a savory, resolved older Cabernet.

Tasting Profile

Dried black currant and cherry giving way to cedar, tobacco leaf, dried herbs and forest floor. Medium-bodied and finely structured rather than plush, with tannins largely resolved, acidity still bright, and a long savory, mineral finish. Dry.
