Cabernet at 13.6% alcohol, grown on decomposed granite in the Sierra Foothills and not released until 2009 - roughly the opposite of how California made Cabernet in 2001. Renaissance sits on 1,300 acres above Oregon House in Yuba County, with vines terraced around a granite dome between about 1,700 and 2,300 feet; cold nights and hot days there give ripeness without weight, and the estate pushed North Yuba through as an AVA in the mid-1980s. This Reserve is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon with 22% Merlot and a trace of Cabernet Franc and Syrah, fermented with native yeasts in open-top oak, aged up to eighteen months in used French, German and American barrels, then held in bottle for years before release. Gideon Beinstock, later of Clos Saron, made it, farming organically and dry-farmed. Twenty-five years on it is fully mature and drinking now. Stand it upright for a day or two, decant gently off the sediment, and drink it the night you open it.

More about Renaissance

South Africa's wine industry exploded in the 1990s when apartheid ended and the world suddenly opened up. Renaissance represents that awakening—producers who had access to new techniques, new markets, new possibilities. A movement toward serious quality and international varieties happened quickly, with flying winemakers and a reimagined competitive landscape forcing everyone to get better. It's the story of a country finding its voice in wine.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast leg of lamb with rosemary, braised oxtail, or duck with lentils. Its moderate weight and savory edge also suit mushroom risotto or aged Gruyere better than a big modern Napa Cabernet would.

Tasting Profile

Dried cherry and cassis with crushed herbs, graphite, tobacco and cedar. Medium-bodied, bright acidity and fine, largely resolved tannins, with a long, mineral, savory finish. Dry.
