The Horseshoe Vineyard sits on a steep, rocky slope at around 1,400 feet in the Santa Cruz Mountains, facing the cool Pacific winds. Known for producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with electric minerality, this site also gives Syrah a taut, aromatic profile that’s rare in California.

The 2018 vintage was long and cool, ideal for slow ripening and deep flavor development. Rhys fermented this wine with 100% whole clusters and aged it in neutral barrels, allowing the site and grape to speak. The result is a wine of blackberry, violet, black olive, cracked pepper, and crushed granite, with a sinewy, structured palate and bright, mouthwatering acidity.

There’s no flash or fruit bomb here—just restrained power and cool-climate intensity that will reward patience. Drink from 2025–2040, or enjoy now with a decant and hearty food.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 97
"The 2018 Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard is dense and brooding. Black cherry, licorice, spice, leather, herbs and mineral accents shape this ample, beautifully resonant Pinot Noir. Diatomaceous Monterey soils estimated to be 11-15 million years old yield a Pinot of notable breadth, texture and complexity." -Antonio Galloni

"As is consistent at this site, the 2018 Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard is aromatically slow to open but unstoppable once it starts. After coaxing, the nose combines captivating aromas of cured meat, brown sugar, spice box and truffle. The palate is svelte and generous, coating the palate with a core of polished fruit flavors, silky texture and mouthwatering acidity. The finish features precise, powerful tannins and a refined frame, concluding this beautifully complex wine and urging the taster to start again. While I found this surprisingly accessible at this stage, it will undoubtedly continue to pay dividends to those who avoid the temptation to pull corks." -Matthew Luczy
