Serious, age-worthy Moulin-a-Vent from the heart of one of Beaujolais' grandest crus. Richard Rottiers, an agronomist who cut his teeth in New Zealand and at Chateau Thivin before taking over here in 2008, farms organically and treats Gamay like the structured, cellar-worthy grape it can be. Champ de Cour is a tiny old-vine parcel in the namesake terroir, vinified with partial carbonic maceration and ten months in barrel to build a real spine. This is a wine designed to be opened around 8 to 10 years out, and the 2014 is settling nicely into that window. Gamay for people who think they don't take Beaujolais seriously.

"The 2014 Moulin a Vent Climat Champ de Cour, bottled October 2015, has a tad more fruit on the nose compared to the "Tradition" cuvée: lively red cherry and redcurrant mixed with dessicated orange peel and spicebox. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity. This is a tensile, more austere take on the appéllation but there is great intensity on the finish and plenty of density. Serious Beaujolais - but delicious too!" —Neal Martin

"Mid to deep crimson. Very ripe cherry aroma. Almost a note of dried cherry. A little ripe in flavour though the tannins contribute to the freshness. I prefer the straight Moulin à Vent but this is a little more ambitious and needs longer."
