If Les Saint-Georges is the elegant aristocrat of Nuits, Les Vaucrains is the brooding muscleman. Sitting at higher elevation on rocky brown clay-limestone soil with limestone scree just above Les Saint-Georges, it is consistently the most powerful and structured 1er Cru in the appellation. Robert Chevillon's bottling, made by sons Bertrand and Denis in the traditional house style, takes long macerations, around 30% new oak from Sirugue, and 18-20 months of barrel aging. The 2008 vintage was classical and tightly wound, and this Vaucrains is the longest-lived wine in the Chevillon lineup. Seventeen years on, it remains youthful and demands either decanting or further patience. Dark, dense, iron-stained Pinot Noir with serious tannic architecture: this is Nuits-Saint-Georges at its most masculine, built for the long haul.

"Ripe, elegant and dense aromas of blue and black pinot fruit plus floral nuances and one can smell the concentration of the rich, thick, mouth coating and impressively scaled flavors that stain the palate with chewy Pinot extract and culminates in a textured, structured and superbly long finish that should be capable of extended aging. Magnificent." —Allen Meadows

Antonio Galloni

"Deep, bright ruby-red. Black raspberry and chocolate aromas are complemented by sweet oak. Less refined than the Saint-Georges or Cailles but solidly built and quite powerful, with a youthfully medicinal character to the blast of dark fruit flavors. Extremely primary and impressively long. This may need the most patience of this excellent set of 2008s." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

"The Chevillon 2008 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Vaucrains projects an amazing sense of deep, dark concentration. Latakia tobacco; peat; rushed stone; roasted red meats; soy; and ripe, fresh blackberry inform the nose and absolutely stain the palate. The tannins here are as ultra-fine as they are formidable, and the tug on my salivary glands as relentless as are the finishing flavors. If this doesn’t leave you reaching for a napkin or your lips fluttering, probably no wine will. The energy and salinity here render a wine that you feel as if you must strain through your teeth nonetheless fleet-of-foot, enticing, and invigorating." —David Schildknecht

More about Robert Chevillon

Domaine Robert Chevillon is basically the gold standard for Nuits-Saint-Georges. The estate has belonged to the Chevillon family for generations, and today brothers Denis and Bertrand (fifth generation) make wines from eight Premier Cru terroirs plus meticulous village cuvées. Robert Parker's critic William Kelley called them 'one of my favorite addresses in all of Burgundy.' These are characterful, age-worthy, utterly Burgundian. No compromise.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Wood-roasted prime rib, venison with juniper, oxtail stew, or aged hard cheese. The wine has the structure and iron grip to handle the boldest red-meat preparations in your repertoire.

Tasting Profile

Black cherry, dried blood orange, iron filings, crushed stone, woodsmoke, and pipe tobacco. The palate is dense and muscular, with a tannic frame that still needs time or a long decant. Long, mineral, savory finish. Cellar through 2035-plus.
