Thierry Germain has turned Roches Neuves into one of France's reference points for biodynamic winegrowing, and Franc de Pied is among his most distinctive wines: Cabernet Franc planted on its own ungrafted roots, without the usual American rootstock that has protected European vines since phylloxera. Working that way is risky and rare, but Germain believes it produces wines of deeper, more direct terroir expression. Farmed biodynamically in Saumur-Champigny and made with minimal intervention, this is the 2016, a classic, structured Loire vintage. Now mature and from a private collection, it's drinking with elegance and savory depth.

Robert Parker

"The 2016 Saumur Champigny Franc de Pied is from pure sandy soils and very small grapes, macerated with whole bunches for 10 days, and bottled with 11.8% alcohol. ("Since 2008, I haven’t harvested above 12% alcohol but with the best maturity,“ Thierry says.) Generously warm and fruity on the very elegant and alluring nose, this is a very intense and charming, wide and beautifully balanced Cabernet Franc with concentrated and perfectly ripe fruit, very fine tannins and a silky texture. The finish is fruity and still charming. A lovely Cabernet Franc!" —Stephan Reinhardt

Our collection celebrates the region’s great diversity, with the mineral-driven whites of Muscadet and Sancerre, the beautiful Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Francs from villages like Vouvray and Chinon, and natural wines from everywhere in the region. Sometimes wonderfully fresh and gulpable, sometimes serious and age-worthy, the prices are always very reasonable.
