Old-vine Silvaner from Carsten Saalwächter, one of Germany's most exciting young winemakers redefining Rheinhessen's potential. From 50-year-old vines on north-facing parcels with limestone-rich soils in Ingelheim. Overnight maceration, gentle basket pressing, spontaneous fermentation in large oak Halbstück and Stückfässer. Aged 22 months on lees, bottled unfiltered and unfined with minimal SO2. Carsten trained in both Germany and Burgundy before taking over the family estate in 2017, producing wines that draw comparisons to both Burgundy and Jura.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 93
"The 2023 Silvaner Alte Reben was made from 50-year-old vines on various parcels of north-facing, weathered yellow limestone. The nose is slightly shy, but it projects ripeness and juiciness. The palate has direction, beautiful texture and bright freshness buffered with lees. A lovely undertow of yeastiness stays and shines, taking it to a mouthwatering, subtle, distinctly salty finish." -Anne Krebiehl, MW

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
