"From Vaillons proper that produced only 10 hl/ha in 2024. Airy and cool aromas include those of white pepper, floral, oyster shell and a whiff of tidal pool character. The super-sleek and borderline painfully intense medium weight flavors possess impressively length on the very dry and cuts-like-a-knife finale. Lovely."

"The 2024 Chablis Vaillons Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru comes from 60-year-old vines that suffered hail damage. It has a complex, focused bouquet that's quite intense due to the low yield (20 hl/ha). The palate is citrus-fresh, edgy and tensile on the entry. It's almost steely for a Vaillons, with just a slight reduction lending energy on the finish. The 2024 has great potential." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"The 2024 Chablis 1er Cru Les Vaillons Vieilles Vignes, sourced from 60-year-old vines in the Vaillons lieu-dit and vinified entirely in stainless steel, was severely affected by hail, yielding just 20 hectoliters per hectare. It wafts from the glass with aromas of pear, orange peel and beeswax, mingling with marine inflections that were less overt in 2023. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied and demonstrative yet incisive, laden with tangy acidity and concluding with a long, chalky finish. With considerable substance, this warm site has performed admirably in this cool vintage." —Kristaps Karklins

"There are pleasant touches of smoky reduction and firm, salty mineral notes on Samuel Billaud's old-vine Vaillons that lead into a fresh, supple texture where acidity balances moderate body to deliver a charming result. The grapes are from 60-year-old vines in the Vaillons lieu-dit, which were gently crushed and fermented on native yeasts in stainless steel. This will drink well on release and can be cellared for up to a decade." —Charles Curtis

More about Samuel Billaud

Samuel Billaud made wine for over 20 vintages at his family's Domaine Billaud-Simon before branching out in 2009 with his own vision. When the family domaine sold in 2014, he secured several prime vineyard parcels in Les Clos, Vaudésir, Blanchot, and other Premier Cru sites—15 hectares total. Hand-harvest for top cuvées, measured oak use (10–20% new), stainless steel aging for village wines. This is a modernist approach to classical Chablis—mineral, precise, terroir-driven.
