Lovely Lilly is the way in to one of Germany's most convincing Pinot Noir houses. It's the entry-level, top-value bottling of Shelter's three Pinots, named for Lilly, the couple's vineyard and cellar dog, who died in 2014. A young dog has since taken over the job. Hans-Bert and Silke Wolf named the winery after the old Canadian hangar they rented when they started. Today they work in a winery they designed themselves: earth is piled over the barrel room and cellar, a wildflower garden insulates it, and solar panels supply the power. Their vineyards lie north of the Kaiserstuhl, where the Black Forest keeps things cooler and the volcanic soils give way to limestone and loess. That's Pinot country built for freshness rather than heft. The house uses no herbicides or pesticides, gives the wine a short cold soak, a gentle press and open-top fermenters, and, in the couple's own words, uses no pumps and no filters. The Spätburgunder and the plainly named Pinot Noir sit above it, so this is the bottle to start with if you want to see what the fuss is about without jumping straight to the top.

"Aged in 6,000-liter vats, the 2023 Pinot Noir Lovely Lilly is based on purchased grapes. The wine opens with a finely intense and elegant red-fruit aroma with tangy notes. Silky, filigreed and elegant on the palate, this is a detailed and fresh Pinot Noir with stimulating grip and tension. It is intense and tight on the finish yet always refreshing and nicely bitter. This is a very nice Pinot Noir for everyday. 13.5% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted at the domaine in Kenzingen, July 2025." —Stephan Reinhardt
